Third Grade Art Lesson 8

Looking at Pottery, Part 1 Drawing Pottery

Objective:

The student will examine pictures of historical pottery and note how animals are used in the design. Then the students will draw off a piece of pottery to be decorated with animal designs.

Materials:

Manila paper and pencils

Procedure:

Begin by looking at the Alligator Effigy Vessel, noting how even thousands of years ago animals and nature were used to design and decorate objects. Note how the alligator is actually carrying the pottery, as well as the geometric design on the alligator and the pot. Next look at the Whistling Jar by the Nazca artist. Point out that the animal on the jar is a jaguar. Both the alligator and jaguar were highly respected animals by these tribes. Notice how the jaguar is more a part of the jar as opposed to carrying the jar. And again, notice the geometric design on the animal. Mention that throughout history, animals as well as nature in general have been used to inspire artists and been incorporated into their work. Next, have the students look at the variety of pottery shapes. Have the students pick out one shape or design their own and draw it off lightly onto manila paper. The pot may be tall or wide, but must be symmetrical. Then have the student spend time thinking about what animal they would like to use on the surface of their pot. If they have pets, they may want to use their pets. If they prefer a more exotic animal be sure to provide pictures for them to refer to. On scrap paper have the students plan their pottery design as well as the geometric shapes on and around it. When they have decided what they will do, have them draw the design onto the manila paper. Save these drawings to be completed on their next lesson.

Conclusion:

Encourage the students to look at the shapes of the bowls and vases in their own home this week. Store their drawings in a safe place to be completed next week.
