Third Grade Art Lesson 30

Observing Animals, Part 2 Completing Our Imaginary Animals

Objective:

The student will complete their animal using crayon or oil pastel.

Materials:

Drawing from last lesson, crayons or oil pastels

Procedure:

Today we will complete our imaginary animal drawings by filling them in with color. Because our animals are imaginary, try to think imaginary with color as well. Many animals are brown, but an unusual color can create a more exciting look. You will either use oil pastel or crayons. In either case, you'll want to layer your colors and make sure the finished product is filled solid. Patterns also are important. Consider patterns on the backs or bodies of your animal, as well as in your background. Control your crayons. Do not scribble. Make your drawing as interesting as it is imaginary.

Conclusion:

Artists have been inspired by nature throughout the history of our world. Many times they worked realistically, but also as we have, they used nature to inspire their imaginations. Examine your work. Make sure you have filled in your entire space, coloring solidly and creating an exciting finished product. Finally, title your work by naming your imaginary animal. Mount and display for everyone to enjoy.
