Third Grade Art Lesson 27

Looking at Flowers, Part 1 Beginning A Yarn Painting

Objective:

The students will examine and do flower studies in order to create a yarn painting of a flower.

Materials:

5 x 5 inch corrugated (or thick) cardboard square, yarn in a variety of colors, white glue, scissors, toothpicks or paperclips

Procedure:

I want to begin our class by looking at and examining a variety of flowers. There are a variety of flowers posted for you, but you may want to look up flowers on the internet or in the encyclopedia to get a wider variety. Examine the face of the flower. Look closely at petal shapes, center areas, color, and design. Find several flowers you particularly like and do drawings to help you understanding how they're put together. Once you've done several drawings, choose one that you like best. Redraw this flower on your cardboard. Make decisions about the colors that you want to use on your flower. It is more interesting to have one petal with several colors than to alternate single colored petals. Begin by pouring white glue in the outline of one petal. Take the yarn color you have selected and go around the outer edge of the petal. Continue with the same or another color as your plan dictates, being careful not to coil the yarn around. As you lay the yarn, use your toothpick or straightened paperclip to press the yarn into the glue. This also will help you guide your yarn in the proper direction. Snip the yarn at the end of each shape. You want to complete your flower first. You may or may not have time during this class period to do so, but work as long and as patiently as you can as this requires tedious manipulation of yarn. Put your work in a safe place to dry.

Conclusion:

Today we have spent time examining flowers. One of our goals in our art program is to help you look at your world. By drawing the things you see you must become familiar with their composition. We will complete our work next lesson.
