Third Grade Art Lesson 26

Final Self Portrait

Objective:

The student will complete a final self portrait using chalk pastels.

Materials:

12 x 18 inch gray paper (also called bogus paper), chalk pastels, newspaper, and mirror

Procedure:

Today we will begin working on our final self portrait. We will be using chalk pastels to represent yourself doing something you particularly enjoy. The first step would be decide what you will be doing in your portrait, such as playing soccer, reading, dancing, playing a musical instrument. Students may find a picture of someone doing this activity, or they may divide into pairs and pose for each other. Look closely at the different shapes of the pose you are going to draw. Put newspaper on your table beneath your gray paper to help contain chalk dust. Take your gray paper and a neutral color piece of chalk. Starting at the top of the page, begin working on the shape of your hair. You want to outline your basic shapes before you actually begin using color. From your hair, work to your face, neck, shoulders, arms, and so forth. Also include whatever background is appropriate for your pose. Once you have your basic pose outlined you may want to take your mirror and spend some time noticing your facial features. You will begin coloring your entire face your skin color. On top of that add eyes, nose, mouth, and ears. You might want to experiment with chalk on a piece of scrap paper to see how easily the colors blend. You will certainly want to blend the colors for your hair as well as other areas in your drawing. Use the side of your chalk to cover large areas quickly. Choose your colors carefully, and think colorful, especially when it comes to brown objects or areas. Work to fill in your entire page. These are typically quick, loose drawings that are a lot of fun to do. Enjoy your work.

Conclusion:

Have your teacher get out the initial self portrait we did at the beginning of the school year. Compare the quality of this drawing with the first drawing. Do you see any improvement in your work? Be sure to mount your work and display it for everyone to enjoy.
