Third Grade Art Lesson 19

Looking at Symbols, Part 1 Drawing the Presidential Seal

Objective:

The students will know that a symbol is an image which represents a thing or idea. The students will be able to recognize the Presidential Seal.

Materials:

Paper plate, colored pencils

Procedure:

Begin by explaining what a symbol is. Ask the students to name a symbol they are familiar with. Why would we use symbols? Symbols are simply visual representations of a thing, person, or place. Today we want to look at the Presidential Seal. The Presidential Seal of course is representative of the office of the Presidency. Begin by describing specifically what you see in this seal. We are going to copy this symbol onto our paper plate. Begin by drawing lightly the basic shapes such as the eagle, the stars, the branches, and the arrows. Once you have the basic design drawn off, we will begin working with our colored pencils. Most third graders like to begin by coloring in the eagle. When you're coloring in the eagle, be sure to blend the colors. You may use brown, but be sure to blend in oranges, golds, and browns to add richness. Also when coloring the white head of the eagle, you will need to add a small amount of purple or blue just to create a shadow under the white feathers. Continue coloring the rest of the Presidential Seal. Avoid getting in a hurry. Make wise color choices and refer to the seal often to make your seal correct. Do not rush your work and get as far along as you can in your drawing today.

Conclusion:

Have the children describe what a symbol is and encourage them to keep their eyes open for symbols throughout the week. Store their work in a safe place to finish the next lesson.
