Third Grade Art Lesson 17

"The Banjo Lesson" by Henry Tanner, Looking at Painting

Objective:

The student will examine the painting The Banjo Lesson by Henry Tanner. The student will complete a drawing of themselves with someone special.

Materials:

White paper, and any drawing material (crayons work well)

Procedure:

Today we will begin by looking at a painting by Henry Tanner called The Banjo Lesson. First describe everything you see in the painting (man, boy, chair, banjo, etc.). Be specific and name each thing that you see. Once the entire painting has been described ask questions about what is going on in the work. Who do you think the old man is? Could he be the boy's grandfather, neighbor, friend? Why would you think that? What is the old man and the boy doing? Have you ever had music lessons? What was the atmosphere between you and your teacher? Typically music lessons are not this friendly? How do you think the little boy feels about the older man? How long do you think the older man has been playing the banjo? Do you think this is a great way to learn to play the banjo? Let's look at the art elements in this painting. How has the artist set up the lighting. You may notice that the old man and the boy are in dark shadow whereas the back of the room is fairly light. Why do you think the artist would do this? Where has the artist placed the main subject? (just to the left of center, but filling most of the page) Do you think anybody else is in the house? What makes you think the way you do? Do you know anybody who is particularly special to you who you spend time with? Perhaps you read together, fish, cook, play sports, or any activity that you might do with someone you care a great deal about. I would like for you to do a drawing of you and a special person doing something together. Draw your picture so that the most important part fills the page. Pay careful attention to the way you use color. Do your best work.

Conclusion:

What is the name of the painting we looked at by Henry Tanner? What is your favorite part about this painting? If you were going to redo this painting, how would you make it different?
