Begin by reading the lesson, then gather the materials for the project. Work through the project with the student to achieve the objective.

Each lesson builds on the previous one, so try to present each lesson in order to provide the student with the building blocks for a strong foundation to a comprehensive art education. There is a lesson per week for each grade level.



Third Grade Art Lesson 13

Midterm Self-Portrait, Using Value with Black and White Chalk


Objective:

The student will create their own portrait with white chalk on white paper as well as with black chalk on white paper.


Materials:

Each student needs at least one sheet of white and black construction paper and one piece of white and black chalk (if chalk is not available, white and black crayons will work as well), mirror, fixative or hairspray for chalk


Procedure:

Each student needs at least one sheet of white and black construction paper and one piece of white and black chalk (if chalk is not available, white and black crayons will work as well), mirror, fixative or hairspray for chalk


Conclusion:

Spray each student's chalk drawings with fixative or you may simply use hairspray to keep the drawings from smearing. Have the students select their best work. Mount and display for everyone to enjoy.
