Second Grade Art Lesson 2
Pattern People, Part 2 Finishing Our Pattern People
Objective:
The students will complete the pattern study they began last week.
Materials:
The drawing we began last week and markers
Procedure:
Explain that you want the students to try completing the work they began on their pattern people. Ask them to tell what a pattern is and ask if they have been noticing patterns since last week. Distribute their drawings and markers and have them begin working. Stress that although we would like them to finish, it would be better to control their markers and draw their patterns carefully, than to try rushing through and doing scribbled work, even if it means not finishing today. Spend time showing how to draw patterns to make them appear to be going behind something (in this case the people). Offer examples for them to look at to see how it is done. Give them the time they need to complete their work. (Many times it take s more than one or two class periods for them to complete this complicated drawing. Encourage them to press on to complete it but also stress that they do their best work.)
Conclusion:
When all of the drawings are completed lay them on a table, hang them on a wall or arrange them so that everyone can see all the drawings. Model how to talk about their work by pointing out strengths you find. (i.e. look how controlled this pattern is, - notice the amount of detail used on this dress, - doesn't this one do a great job of showing how the background patterns go behind the people,- etc.) Encourage the kids to talk about drawings they like and have them point out the specific reasons why they like that drawing. Mount the finished work on poster board and display for the whole school to enjoy.
