Second Grade Art Lesson 19
"American Gothic" by Grant Wood, Part 2 Completing our Version
Objective:
The students will complete the work they began in the last lesson. They will use crayons and copy the color patterns used in the original painting and make their own color decisions to use on the drawing of themselves.
Materials:
the work from last lesson, crayons, and the copy of Grant Wood's American Gothic
Procedure:
Ask the class if they remember they name of the artist and the painting we looked at last lesson. Tell them we are going to continue working on our own version of that work by incorporating color. We will use wax crayons to complete our work. Encourage them to look closely at the painting to get similar colors in their own work. Suggest they mix or blend crayon colors together to get as close as they can to the color in the painting. Tell them to do the best work they can by controlling the coloring strokes and by not scribbling. If they get in a hurry, suggest the stop and shake out their hands and take a short break. Typically the finishing of this work tales several class periods and they need the encouragement to press on and get the work done well. Remind them we are more interested in them finishing well rather than fast.
Conclusion:
Once again have the children tell you the name of the artist and the painting that we have studied. Give them an opportunity to tell what was hard and what was easy about finishing their work. Mount their drawings and display for the entire school to enjoy.
