Second Grade Art Lesson 14
Designing a Treasure Box, Part 3 Completing Our Treasure Boxes
Objective:
After the many steps involved in this project the students will complete their treasure boxes and experience the rewards of hard and focused work.
Materials:
black drawing or India ink, lots of paper towels, optional plastic jewels, mirrors or other small decoration for the box
Procedure:
Today we will finish our treasure boxes by giving them and the look of old or aged metal. If you have smocks for the children to wear it might be a good idea to distribute them. Also, if you have any students that do not deal well with messy hands, you might give them a pair of disposable gloves. To give our box that aged look we first take paper towels and pour a small amount of black ink on them and begin rubbing across the surface. Pressure should be applied in order to get the ink to flow into the recesses of the design. All of the aluminum foil should be treated to get a consistent look. Once ink has been spread across and pressed down into the recesses, take a clean paper towel to polish off the ink from the raised surfaces. This contrast creates a lovely effect. The inking process should take about 15 20 minuets. When it is complete, the students may use white glue to secure some jewels for added decoration if they are available. Limit the number of jewels as to many can overpower the finished work. Set the boxes aside to dry. If felt is available, cut rectangles the size of the bottom and top of the box and use white glue to keep each piece in place.
Conclusion:
When the boxes are all dry, place them on a table for everyone to view. Have the children discuss the process the have experienced, telling what was easiest and most difficult about creating them. You may want to suggest that they pretend they found their own box somewhere buried in the sand or beneath a tree. Have them write a descriptive story about what their box looks like and what they might have found in it. These treasure boxes make lovely gifts, especially when a poem is written and put inside.
