Kindergarten Art Lesson 9
A Parade of Thankful Turkeys
Objective:
The goal for this lesson is to get the children to think about and verbalize things they are thankful for. Once they have decided on the things they are most thankful for they will assign colors and designs to represent those things on a tracing of their own hand to create a parade of thankful turkeys.
Materials:
6” x 24” white drawing paper, markers and pencil
Procedure:
Remind the children how we examined a work of art last lesson by describing it, interpreting it, noticing how the artist made it and then judging it. Help them to recall that the name of the painting we looked at is “One of the Family”. Explain how we touched on what kind of story the painting told. Today, we are going to do a work of art that tells a story. We will make a parade of thankful turkeys using a tracing of our hand as the turkeys. Trace your hand as many times as you can across your page (about four or five times). Next, spend some time thinking about the things you know about that you are the most thankful for. Finally, assign some colors and designs to each turkey to represent what the turkey stands for. (For example, I am thankful for my family. I colored the first turkey feather pink for my daughter, blue for my son, and red for the love I have for my husband. See the video for more examples.) Encourage the children to be creative and original. Tell them to let their imaginations run with this one. Have the students color in each turkey to represent things they have come up with. (Many children will want to write words to make them feel more comfortable. Encourage them to assign colors instead but don’t deny them if they persist in wanting the word written.)
Conclusion:
When everyone has finished their parade, use the drawings for show and tell giving each child the opportunity to talk about the things he or she is thankful for. It might be best to have three to five children share theirs throughout the day and week.
