Objective:
The student will be guided through the four steps to looking at and evaluating art using Frederick Cotmans painting “One of the Family”
Materials:
None
Procedure:
Explain that we are going to learn how to look at and evaluate a painting today. The four steps to looking at any work of art are; 1. Describe what you see, be very specific, and do not include your opinion of anything, stick to the unarguable facts 2. Ask yourself questions about what the work is about; interpret what the artist is saying to you, 3. Analyze what the artist has done in the work, focusing on the elements of art and principles of design. And 4. Make a judgment about the work based on these observations.
Conclusion:
Review the four steps of looking at a work of art. Suggest the children do a drawing of their own that tells a story about an animal or pet they may have.
