Kindergarten Art Lesson 30
Self Portrait Using Value, Part 2 Completing Our Value Study
Objective:
The students will use the gray scale they made last lesson to help them color in their self portraits. They will complete this last drawing and compare it with the first self portrait they created at the beginning of the year.
Materials:
Self portrait drawing from last week, gray scale and drawing pencil (you may also want to give them a scrap piece of paper to put under their hand to keep from smearing the pencil over their drawing)
Procedure:
Have the children look carefully at their gray scales and notice the different values on it. Tell them to assign different values to different areas of their self portraits. It is important that they use all of the different values throughout their drawing. Also, it is important that they take care to control their pencils using their whole arm to color with. Use a scrap piece of paper to put on top of the drawing and under their hand to keep from smearing their work. Encourage them to enjoy this process and do their best.
Conclusion:
When all of the drawings are complete, have everyone spend some time looking at them making positive comments about the ones they like. Look for a full range of value, large representations of the children, completed backgrounds and overall control. If the drawings of the children that we did in the beginning of the year are available, put them out next to these value studies. Have the children compare their own works to see how far they have come. Encourage the children by letting them know they have completed a very difficult drawing (the value study) and cheer them on to continue drawing throughout the summer to improve the quality of their work.
