Kindergarten Art Lesson 27
Watercolor Painting, Part 2 Painting our Trees with Thick and Thin Lines
Objective:
The students will complete their watercolor paintings using a stick and black drawing ink. They will review previous learning about thick and thin lines and apply that information to their drawing.
Materials:
The watercolor paintings from last lesson, sharpened sticks (the sticks can be small twigs, if they are small enough they can be sharpened in a regular pencil sharpener, otherwise use an xacto knife and be sure to push the blade away from your hand as you sharpen - see the demonstration in the video) and black drawing ink. The drawing ink can be purchased in a quart size container (the most economical way to buy it) and poured into very small cups (such as children medicine cups). If these materials cannot be obtained a sharpie type marker can be used instead (permanent black ink pen).
Procedure:
Distribute the watercolor paintings from last week and distribute drawing sticks and ink. Explain that we will be using a material that can be very messy and they need to stay in their seat and follow directions carefully. Explain that we are going to enhance our painting by drawing thick and thin black lines to delineate the tree. Remind them that we have done this type of things when we were studying lines and looking at winter trees. Begin with the treetop by putting small strokes of curved lines to indicate the leaves. Continue onto the trunk by drawing the bark with thick and thin lines to create the tree trunk texture. Add some small, short strokes to create grass around the bottom of the trunk and throughout the ground. Work thoughtfully and neatly.
Conclusion:
Place all of the drawing/paintings on the floor or on a table for everyone to view. Encourage the children to talk about the ones they like the most and to explain why, using words like value, tree form, texture etc. Find something positive to say about each drawing. Mount them on poster board and hang them in the hall for everyone to enjoy.
