Kindergarten Art Lesson 20
Flower Study, Part 1
Objective:
The students will examine a painting by Georgia O’Keefe called “Poppy”. The student will then spend time looking at and drawing flowers from direct observation or pictures. The student will complete a large drawing of a flower on an 18” x 18” sheet of paper to be painted in the next lesson.
Materials:
Pictures of flowers or a variety of real flowers for the children to look at, practice drawing paper, a sheet of 18” x 18” white or manila paper and a pencil
Procedure:
Begin by showing the painting “Poppy” by Georgia O’Keefe. Talk about how she puts the viewer in a position right above the flower and how the entire space is filled with only the flower. Have the children look at pictures or a variety of real flowers to become familiar with them. Encourage them to look closely and carefully to the shape of the petals, stem and leaves. Next, have the students choose the flower they like best and draw it onto a piece of 18” x 18” sheet of paper. Collect the completed drawings and store them until next lesson when we will paint them.
Conclusion:
Remind the students of the name of the artist who painted “Poppy”, Georgia O’Keefe. Have them consider doing more drawings of the things they can observe like the flowers and encourage them to always look carefully and observe the details.
