Kindergarten Art Lesson 11
A Snowman, Part 1 Painting a Snowman
Objective:
The student will create a wintry snowman by painting white shapes onto a blue background using a paint brush and their fingertips.
Materials:
Blue construction paper (9” x 12”), white tempera paint, paint brush, water and paper towels
Procedure:
Pour out the white paint into a container that is easy to access for the children such as a bowl. Distribute the blue paper and paint brushes. Have the children begin high up on their paper and paint a circle, beneath that add a second and slightly larger circle, and beneath that add a larger and final circle. Encourage the children to hold their brush correctly and control it. Next have them add the ground line, putting it up on the paper behind/beside the snowman. Once these things are done, have the students put their brush in a cup of water so it won’t dry out. Next instruct them to paint the falling snowflakes with their fingertips. They will delight in this part and may tend to overdo it, so watch them carefully.
Conclusion:
Have the children put their work on a drying rack or on a flat surface to dry. Once they are dry you may want to stack them and press them with some heavy books to flatten them out before we complete the snowmen in the next lesson.
