Each lesson builds on the previous one, so try to present each lesson in order to provide the student with the building blocks for a strong foundation to a comprehensive art education. There is a lesson per week for each grade level.



Fourth Grade Art Lesson 7

Working with Patterns, Part 1 Giant Leaf Drawing


Objective:

The student will study a variety of leaf shapes and do studies (drawings) of them. The student will learn the color spectrum and design a pattern to fill in the giant leaf they selected for their work.


Materials:

a variety of leaves or pictures of leaves, paper for studies, one 12 X 18 sheet of white drawing paper, crayons


Procedure:

We are going to begin our work today by looking at a variety of leaf shapes. It would be ideal if you had a collection of leaves from trees where you live. Learn the names of the leaves and identify the shapes. Commit all of this information to memory by doing studies (drawings) of every type of leaf you have available. Once you feel that you have a good set of studies, choose one leaf which you particularly like the shape of. Draw this leaf onto your white drawing paper. Fill the paper with the leaf so that you have a giant leaf. Next, you are going to know by experience what the color spectrum is. On one side of the leaf you will color in the entire color spectrum. The order of the colors would be; red, red-orange, orange, yellow-orange, yellow, yellow-green, green, blue-green, blue, blue-violet, violet, red-violet. Collect these color crayons and beginning with any one of the colors, color in half of your leaf with the color spectrum in proper order. Be sure to press down hard enough to cover the white paper solidly. You may draw off stripes or let your colors bleed in to each other. Once you have the spectrum completed, design some sort of pattern using at least three of the colors from the color spectrum. You are welcome to incorporate more than three colors, but you need to use a minimum of three. Once you have an interesting design worked out fill in the other half of your leaf with the pattern. Again, be sure you fill up all of the space and color solidly so it will show up well.

Today we have done a lot of work! How many leaf names can you name and recognize? How exciting does your giant leaf look that celebrates the leaf you like the best? Can you name the color spectrum without looking at the list of colors? Store your work in a safe place and we will complete it in our next lesson.
