Fourth Grade Art Lesson 27
Preparing for Painting, Part 4 Shoe Shape Collage with Patterned Background
Objective:
The students will use the now familiar shapes of their shoes to make a collage. The student will complete the collage with shapes arranged to create a pattern in the background.
Materials:
2, 12 x 18 sheet of construction paper (any color), a collection of other sheets of construction paper for cutting, scissors, glue stick
Procedure:
Today I want us to use our shoe as the subject for a work of art called collage. We have made several collages this year and now I want you to see the benefit of using a subject that you have become very familiar with. We have been painting our shoe and by now should know well the basic shapes it is made up of. Now I want you to draw the same shoe only this time draw it off twice as large as you did before onto one of the 12 x 18 sheet of paper. To help you make it large, put a mark where the toe of the shoe goes and a mark where the heel should be, taking up the entire page. Fill in the details between the two marks. Once you have the shoe complete with details filled in, cut it out with your scissors. Next, cut your shoe into the basic shapes which you have drawn. You will use this as a pattern for your finished work. Decide how you want to use color (use the information you discovered through our painting exercise) and collect the colors you want for the finished shoe. Using your pattern pieces, trace them onto the different colors for each part of your shoe. Cut out the color shapes and arrange them as they should be on the second 12 x 18 sheet of paper. Glue them down with the glue stick. Next, decide on two or three shapes that you can use for your background. Cut the shapes out in varying sizes (large, medium and small) and arrange them in an interesting pattern for the background. Glue the shapes down.
Conclusion:
Examine your finished collage to see if you have filled the entire page with an interesting arrangement of shapes and colors. Is your shoe at least twice its real size? How does this affect your art work? Does your background pattern compliment the shapes of your shoe? What kind of color scheme did you use? If you need to add any shapes, do so. Mount your work on a piece of white poster board and display for everyone to enjoy.
