Fourth Grade Art Lesson 26

Preparing for Painting, Part 3 Painting With Warm and Cool Colors

Objective:

The student will complete the last two paintings of their shoe using either warm or cool colors on one and using one color with tints on the other. The student will know and review what the primary colors are, what complimentary colors are, what warm and cool colors are and what a tint is.

Materials:

our paintings from the last lesson, acrylic or tempera paint, brushes, water and paper towels

Procedure:

Now we will finish our work by painting in the last two shoe drawings. In the first painting I want you to chose either warm or cool colors. The warm colors are reds, yellows and oranges and the cool colors are blues, green and purples. Chose one and paint your shoe using only those colors. Plan your colors carefully as you will need to fill in the background also. Also, since we are working only with the primary colors, you will need to mix one of your colors. For example if you are using the warm colors you will need to mix red and yellow to get orange. You may also want to experiment to get a yellow orange and a red orange. This will give you more colors to work with. For the last painting, chose one color and we will make tints of the one color by adding different amounts of white. A tint is any color plus white. We call this value. You will have to work carefully to create a wide range of values so that we will be able to see your shoe. You may mix the colors directly on the paper or on your pallet. Whichever works best for you. Fill in the entire area to complete your work.

Conclusion:

Look carefully at all four paintings. Which one do you think is the best or most interesting to look at? If you unified your work by having one color in each of your four paintings, the image will be interesting as a whole. However, if you feel that the four paintings do not work together you may cut them into four separate paintings. Notice the difference between using straight color versus blending colors as you did in the complimentary and tints painting. Which do you find more appealing. Write out each of the color schemes you used on the back of each painting. Remember that this is an exercise designed to help you learn the basic color schemes, as well as to give you practice working with a paint brush. We have used our shoe as the subject and in the next lesson, we will continue with this same subject to make a collage. Doing so will help you to see how using the same subject over and over will help you to improve the quality of your work.
