Thank You for choosing the Arttango Online Art Course to educate your students.

Begin by reading the lesson, then gather the materials for the project. Work through the project with the student to achieve the objective.

Each lesson builds on the previous one, so try to present each lesson in order to provide the student with the building blocks for a strong foundation to a comprehensive art education. There is a lesson per week for each grade level.

Fourth Grade Art Lesson 24

Preparing for Painting, Part 1 Drawing, Cutting Out and Tracing Our Shoe

Objective:

The student will examine their shoe and complete a drawing of it on a 6 X 9 sheet of paper. The drawing will be cut out and used as a pattern so it can be repeated four times onto a 12 X 18 sheet of paper.

Materials:

a 6 x 9 sheet of construction paper or other heavy weight paper, a 12 X 18 sheet of heavy white paper, a pencil, each child will use their own shoe

Procedure:

Today we are going to prepare a surface to use for a color study painting. We are going to use your shoe as the subject. We have drawn our shoes earlier in the year when we were learning the importance of observing the things we want to draw over trying to remember them. This time, we will use your shoe because it is available and it is something you are familiar with. There was an art movement in the early sixties and seventies called Pop Art. The artist used everyday objects as the subject for fine art. This was a strong contrast to the usual portrait, still life or landscape subject matter common in the arts. Pop artist wanted the public to focus on the every day objects and see them as art in and of themselves. One of the most popular artist was Andy Warhol. One of the things he did was to take an object or portrait and repeat it several times on one canvas. Often each subject was painted with different color schemes. This is what we are going to do. We are going to draw the same image four times and paint each one with a different color scheme. So take your shoe off and sit it in front of you and do the most accurate representation you can. You will need to delineate each part or section of your shoe as you will need the shapes to add interest to your work. Once you have the shoe drawn off (large enough to fill the 6 x 9 paper) cut it out. Take your 12 x 18 white paper and fold it in half and then in half again. Unfold your paper and use the fold lines to help you see the four quadrants of your painting. In each quadrant, trace off the shoe using the pattern you cut out. When you have drawn all four shoes, go back into each one and draw off the details and shapes that make your shoe look like it does. Keep this paper in a safe place and we will begin painting each quadrant in the upcoming lessons.

Conclusion:

Today we have prepared drawings to use for a painting. We are doing something similar to what the pop artist of the sixties and seventies did. You may want to take some time and search the internet to find examples of pop art.
