Fourth Grade Art Lesson 21
Heart Collage
Objective:
The student will use the shape of a heart as the predominant shape in a collage. The student will work out an interesting composition using the heart shape and other cut paper shapes
Materials:
a variety of color construction paper, a sheet of white paper, scissors, glue stick
Procedure:
Today we are going to make a collage – which is an arrangement of shapes on a background. We want to unify your collage by repeating one particular shape throughout the composition. We will use the heart shape. There are many ways to draw a heart shape – some are long and thin, some are short and fat, some have one side of the curved shape larger than the other, some have long, thin tails. Draw enough hearts on scrap paper until you find the one that suites you best. Next, cut out four or five of the heart shapes you have chosen and place them on your white background paper. Do not glue them down. Just spend a little time arranging them to see what composition looks best. Once you have an arrangement that sparks interest, cut out other shapes to compliment it. Chose your colors and shapes carefully. You may need to use lines to connect some of the shapes to pull the overall composition together. Once you have cut out enough shapes to fill your page, use a glue stick to glue all of the shapes down.
Conclusion:
When you feel you have come up with the best overall design, ask yourself the following questions: 1. Is my paper filled enough or do I have large white spaces that look empty? 2. Does the arrangement cause my eye to flow over the image? 3. Do the colors and shapes work together to create an interesting composition? 4. What do I like best about my work? 5. What would I do different if I were to do another collage similar to this one? Mount your work on a piece of poster board and hang it for everyone to enjoy!
