Fourth Grade Art Lesson 10

Looking at Insects, Part 2 Water Coloring Our Insect Background

Objective:

The students will complete their background by filling it in with watercolor. The student will know what a watercolor resist is.

Materials:

a watercolor pan for each student, paint brush, water, paper towels, insect drawing from last week

Procedure:

Today we will finish our work by filling in the background with watercolors. Obviously, watercolor is a water based paint and water and wax do not mix. Thus when we paint over the crayon the watercolor will only stick to the parts of the paper that have no wax on them. This is called resist. To paint your background I would like for you to mix your colors to get variety. However, if you mix all of the colors you will end up with a muddy brown finish. So mix your color first in the opened top of your watercolor pan. Using your brush put clean water into the top of the pan. Next decide if you want to work with mostly warm or cool colors. When you have made up your mind about the color, start mixing either the reds, yellows and oranges, (warm) or the blues, greens and purples (cool) together. It is not necessary to blend the colors to get one solid color. In fact, your work will be more interesting if you allow the colors to vary in value and intensity. Play around with the possibilities and fill in your background.

Conclusion:

Today we have completed a watercolor resist. Spend some time looking at each students work and point out the positive things about the work. Mount your insect studies for everyone to enjoy.
