First Grade Art Lesson 4
Decorative Lettering Part 2 Making a Boarder for Our Letter Designs
Objective:
The student will design a border for their letter drawing.
Materials:
Last lesson's work, markers
Procedure:
Today we will create a border around our letter. Who knows what a border is? A border is like a frame for our picture. You may first want to draw off the thickness of width of your border. When you have that established, you will basically be working with pattern. In your pattern, I want you to use your letter. We do not need to be able to recognize it as your letter, that is you can turn it sideways. But I want you to use your letter somehow in your design. You might want to practice and try several designs on scrap paper before you begin. Once you have your pattern worked out simply fill it in with colors. This will give your decorated letter a finished and complete look.
Conclusion:
Recall the illuminated manuscripts we looked at in the beginning of this project. Compare the decorative quality of the letters to your own decorated letter. Are they similar? Mount your work and display it for everyone to enjoy.
