First Grade Art Lesson 29
Looking at "The Scream", by Munch, Painting Our Final Portrait Background
Objective:
The student will look at Edward Munch’s “The Scream” and examine it in detail. The student will copy the work on white paper with crayons. The student will paint a background for our final expressive portrait.
Materials:
One 9 X 12 white drawing paper, one 12 X 18 white paper, crayons, tempera paint
Procedure:
If you recall our last lesson you’ll remember that we looked at expressions. Today we are going to examine a famous painting by Edward Munch called “The Scream”. Looking at the top of the painting we see a red and orange sky above green and blue water with some sandbars or land forms in the middle. On the left is a pier or bridge which stretches on a diagonal to the bottom of the painting. On the pier we see a person with their hands clasped on either side of their face, wide eyes and an open mouth. We know by the title that this person is screaming, but why? Why do you think the person is screaming? What is it about their facial features that indicate to us that they are screaming? Notice how the artist has blended the colors throughout the painting. I want you to copy this work on your small white paper using your crayons. By copying it, you will become very familiar with it and will have an opportunity to practice making facial expressions. Fill your page and blend your crayon colors. When you have completed your drawing I want you to do one more thing for our class next week. We will be making our final, expressive self portrait. I want you to chose one color of tempera paint and spread it all across the paper. We will use this as our background in our next lesson. Be sure to put your name on it and put in a safe place to dry.
Conclusion:
Who can tell the name of the painting we looked at and copied today? Be prepared to fill your own painted paper with an expressive portrait of yourself for our next lesson.
