First Grade Art Lesson 28
Expressions On My Face, Learning to Observe
Objective:
The student will spend time looking at their own expressions and observing the changes in their facial features. The students will draw of their observations on white paper.
Materials:
White drawing paper, pencil, mirror
Procedure:
What is an expression? Can you look really sad, or angry, or happy? These are all expressions and I want us to spend time today looking at and examining the things that happen to our face when we make these expressions. Use your mirror to look at how your face changes when you change expressions. Make an expression of some sort and hold it for a minuet or two. Notice your eyes, eyebrows, and mouth in particular. These three areas define to a large extent what our expression is. Look at other students in your class when they make expressions. Observe carefully all of the changes that take place on a persons face when they show different expressions. Draw as many different expressions as you have time for in class.
Conclusion:
Today we have spent time looking and observing different expressions and how our face changes when we make these expressions. Our drawings will help us as we prepare to do our final self portrait, a painted expression.
