First Grade Art Lesson 21
Giant Heart Drawing, Part 1 Color Design with Crayons
Objective:
The student will begin working on a drawing of a giant heart in an effort to practice design and color application.
Materials:
18 X 24 manila paper, crayons
Procedure:
In our last lesson we created textured hearts. We had some good practice drawing the heart shape. Today, we will continue working with the heart but instead of working with texture, we are going to focus on design and color. You may need to spread yourselves out because we are going to be making giant hearts. Your paper is large and there may not be enough room on the tables for everyone to work at the same time. If you have a hard, clean floor that might be a good place to spread out to. Begin by drawing off the largest heart you can. Try to make your heart fill the page. You should use a light color crayon such as white or tan so that if you make a mistake you will be able to easily cover it over. Use your whole arm when you draw which will help you gain better control. When you have your heart drawn off, fill the inside with patterns and designs. Do not color the heart in with one solid color. See how interesting you can make your heart on the inside. You may want to spend time looking at the examples that are posted to help give you ideas. When you have a plan for the patterns, carefully choose the colors you want to use to fill the patterns in. Think of what you have learned about color this year; warm colors jump out at us, cool colors tend to go back into the background, mixing your crayon colors can create some wonderful effects. Look at the shapes and design you have made and choose the colors that will make them show up the best. Do not get in a hurry and start scribbling. Control your coloring and cover over the manila paper. This work takes time. If you cannot finish in the time you have today you can work on it later. I would rather you take longer to do excellent work than to hurry up and do messy work.
Conclusion:
Today we have drawn off giant hearts and filled them with design, pattern and color. Examine your work to see if there is anything you can do to make it look better. Are the edges of your design sharp and clean? Have you colored solidly enough to completely cover the manila paper? Are your designs and patterns interesting to look at? Do not fold your drawings. If you do not have a place to store them flat, roll them up and put a rubber band around them. We will work on the background in our next lesson.
