Fifth Grade Art Lesson 7

Tissue Paper Collage, Part 1 Still Life Pumpkins

Objective:

The student will use tissue paper to build up a collage of a still life arrangement.

Materials:

A variety of colored tissue paper, heavy white drawing paper, liquid starch, small containers for starch, paint brushes, a still life arrangement of a pumpkin and fall leaves

Procedure:

Today we are going to celebrate fall. If the season of fall does not happen where you life, celebrate it with us here. We are going to look at a still life arrangement of a pumpkin and fall leaves and make a tissue paper collage from it. To begin, select warm color tissue papers (reds, yellows, oranges). Without drawing any part of the still life, we are going to use liquid starch to glue down small torn shapes of these warm color tissue papers. Tear your tissue paper pieces and use them like puzzle pieces to make the pumpkin and leaf shapes. To secure each piece, simply paint over it with the liquid starch, being careful not to use too much starch. Use a variety of warm colors and overlap to make your fall shapes interesting. When you have completed the still life portion fill in the background using only cool colors (blues, greens, purples). When your work is complete put it in a safe place to dry.

Conclusion:

When the tissue paper collages have dried, stack them and put heavy books on top to flatten the papers. We will complete this work next lesson.
