Fifth Grade Art Lesson 29
Value Study, Part 1 Our Final Portrait
Objective:
The student will begin a final self portrait using value.
Materials:
9 x 12 inch white drawing paper, pencil, mirror
Procedure:
Today we will begin working on our final self portrait. You may recall at the beginning of this school year, we did a base line portrait. We want to see the progress you have made by comparing these two portraits. Use your mirror often. Begin in the center of your white paper by drawing off your eyes. Remember they are basically an almond shape, and there is one eye's width between your eyes. Examine your eyes carefully for details of eyelids, lid lines, and eyelashes. Next pencil in your eyebrows, which will naturally lead you to your nose. Lightly draw off your mouth beneath your nose, and then draw your jawline. Outline the basic shape of your hair, like a wig. When you have your portrait completely lined off. Go back into it using value as you have learned throughout this year. Use your gray scale as a reference. Also pay close attention to the texture of your eyebrows and hair. You may want to put a clean sheet of paper under your hand to avoid smearing your pencil marks as you draw. Control your pencil and do your best work.
Conclusion:
Examine your work for a full range of value, interesting texture, and an accurate portrait of yourself. Put your work in a safe place to complete next lesson.
