Fifth Grade Art Lesson 27
Flower Studies, Part 2 Waxing in Our Flower
Objective:
The student will use their flower design to complete the first step of creating a batik style image.
Materials:
Last lesson's work, 9 x 12 inch heavy white drawing paper, crayons
Procedure:
We are going to use your flower design to make a piece of art work that resembles the art of batik. Batik is typically done on fabric, but we will be working on paper. The first step is to wax in your flower. By waxing in, I mean you will take your color crayons and literally build up the wax as you color your design. Warm colors work well on the actual flower, and cool colors for the stem and background. As you color, press hard to make sure you are building up a thick layer of wax. You certainly may blend your colors. Do not get in a hurry to finish your background. Give it the same amount of energy you give your flower. When your work is complete, you should be able to rub your hand over your drawing and feel solid wax.
Conclusion:
Spend time throughout the week looking up batik on the internet to see examples of this art form. We will complete your work in the next lesson.
