Fifth Grade Art Lesson 18
Warm and Cool Colors, Part 2 Completing Our Drawing, Designing the Background
Objective:
The students will complete their giant shoe drawing by filling in the background with either warm or cool colors, the opposite of what they used on their shoes.
Materials:
Last lesson's work, oil pastels or crayons, newspaper to put under your work
Procedure:
Today we will complete our drawing by filling in our background. Look at the shapes you have drawn inside your shoe. Notice particularly the shapes that draw your attention. For filling in your background, design a pattern using these shapes. Do not color your background one solid color; rather complement your shoe by creating a pattern that uses some portion of the shapes within the shoe. If your shoe is warm colors, your background should be all cool colors and vice versa. Once again control your crayons; do not scribble. Color solidly to make sure your manila paper does not show through. Be sure your entire page is filled with color.
Conclusion:
For an optional writing assignment, have the students compose an advertisement for their shoe design. Be sure they include a detailed description. Mount their work and hang it in the halls for everyone to enjoy.
