Fifth Grade Art Lesson 17
Warm and Cool Colors, Part 1 Larger Than Life Shoe Drawing
Objective:
The student will draw off their own shoe larger than life and use warm or cool colors to color it in.
Materials:
12 x 18 inch manila paper, oil pastels or crayons, your most interesting shoe
Procedure:
Today we are going to use our shoe to look at the art elements color and shape. Spend some time examining your shoe. Look at it from all sides and become very familiar with it. You are going to draw your shoe twice or even three times its original size onto your manila paper. To help you draw it as large as you need, take your white crayon or oil pastel and make a small mark low and small on the right side of your paper. Do the same on the left. Let these two lines be the beginning and ending point of your shoe. Simply connect them and fill in the space between with the shapes of your shoe. Once you have your shoe drawn off you may want to divide it up into more interesting shapes than are in your original shoe. Do not go overboard to cause distraction from the overall look of your shoe. To begin coloring in your shoe, select either warm colors or cool colors. You will be coloring solidly so that we can no longer see the manila paper underneath. Plan your color decisions before you begin coloring. If you are using oil pastels be sure to do yellows before reds to avoid smearing. Enjoy coloring this familiar object and seeing it in a new way.
Conclusion:
Art provides us with a great opportunity to look at everyday objects in new way. Do you think you would buy these same shoes in the colors you chose. We will complete our work next lesson.
