Fifth Grade Art Lesson 10
Weaving, Part 2 Completing Our Circle Weaving
Objective:
The students will complete their weaving and understand radial balance.
Materials:
Last lesson's looms, yarn in a variety of colors, large plastic needles like darning needles, optional feathers, beads, pine straw, etc.
Procedure:
Today we will begin weaving and as a result will discover radial balance. Select your colors and begin by pulling a fairly long length of yarn and threading it through your weaving needle. Weave your yarn over and under your central threads. When you've gone half way around stop to pull the yarn through, leaving enough to tie off. You want it to be tight without having tension. Continue this process around and around, going over, under, over, under. Pay close attention to the over, under process. To extend one color or change colors simply tie off the end of the recently woven color to the end of the new yarn. Continue weaving until you approach the outer edge of your loom. Choose your colors carefully as well as the width of the band of each color. Tie off the end of your last yarn to one of the spokes.
Conclusion:
The students may incorporate feathers, pine straw, or other interesting materials into their weaving to give it a unique look. Display their work for everyone to enjoy.
